Celebrating his 20th year as a Sacred Heart debate coach, lauded Haligonian litigator Brian Casey found himself in our halls and classrooms several times throughout January, volunteering his coaching experience and debating expertise to our Grade 6 students as they prepared for their big classroom debate.
Our students, arguing both for and against the legitimacy of zoos in contemporary society, were championed on all fronts by Casey, who made sure to mention their strong academic research and stage presence, noting that the ability to understand the opposing team’s tactics was key to being a successful debater.
After the dust had settled and the victor declared by the honourable judge Jared Griffiths, students were able to comment about their experience. It turns out they enjoyed watching as much as they did participating. We’re delighted to see that the future of our Debate Program is looking strong, thanks to Brian Casey and his ongoing commitment to our students.
