Who We Are

Join Our Board

As a volunteer Board member, you have the opportunity to join a dedicated group of community members who are shaping and stewarding Halifax’s oldest and most distinguished independent school. With over 170 years of specialized education and a faith-based mission that guides the academic, moral, and leadership development of its students, this is an opportunity like no other.

We encourage those connected to Sacred Heart School of Halifax including parents, alums, past parents, friends, and the community at large to put their names forward. As a competency-based Board, we are looking for individuals with diverse skill sets and experiences who are willing to make a commitment to the future of this great School. We seek diversity in our candidates, and welcome applications from across faith, race, geographic, and demographic backgrounds. You can also get involved at just the committee level. If you have skills, passion, and ideas that align with the committees noted below, please do reach out to boardchair@shsh.ca.

Each year, the Nominating and Governance Committee invites expressions of interest by submitting via email (boardchair@shsh.ca) a bio that outlines your skills and experience, how you are connected to Sacred Heart, and how you believe you can contribute to the growth and mission of the School. All candidates will be considered and contacted by a member of the Nominating and Governance Committee. Depending on the number of vacancies, a slate of candidates will be presented to the Board in the spring.

The current Terms of Reference call for a minimum of at least six meetings to be held throughout the school year and Board Members are expected to attend all or most of these meetings. There is also a full-day retreat and an orientation for new Board members. All Board members serve on one of the Board committees — Finance, Planning, Nominating and Governance, Facilities, or Engagement. Board Members are expected to act as ambassadors for our School in the wider community, contribute to the Annual Giving Fund, and are expected to participate in School activities throughout the year as schedules permit.
