  • Grade 10 Girls Confront Reconciliation in Memory Box Project

    The Girls' Grade 10 Canadian History class recently confronted the legacy of residential schools through the Memory Box Project.  Memory boxes are student-curated collections of images, objects and texts intended to explore and reflect on life before, during and after residential schools for Canadian First Nations. Students gathered their objects, poems, photographs, and primary source accounts in a box they decorated with a work by a First Naions artist. We shared our box contents together over two classes, also discussing 150 Acts of Reconciliation for Canada's 150. Each student chose two personal acts of reconciliation to commit to, including learning words from Mi'kmaq, and discussing First Nations health issues on reserves. Important first steps for these girls to understand this difficult time in Canadian history.
