Celebrating Life During Día de los Muertos

Our grade 10 and 11 Spanish classes are celebrating the lives of deceased loved ones during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). They worked together with Señora Riley to create a traditional celebratory altar; not for worshipping, but for welcoming and honouring the spirits of the deceased.
This celebration recognizing pre-Hispanic religious rites and Christian feasts, falls on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day — not to be confused with Halloween. Students decorated the altar with pieces of jewelry, photos of loved ones, replicas of favourite foods, sugar skulls to honour the tradition of sugar art, beautiful marigolds and papel picado. It was an incredible display of colour and love that even got a thumbs-up from our Mexican students!
