After a successful showing at this past weekend’s Impromptu Tournament, three members of the Sacred Heart community were honoured with awards for their outstanding contributions to Nova Scotia student debating.
Senior School English and Religious Studies Teacher, Kathryn Bjornson, was presented with the Willis McLeese Award for her efforts to promote debating both at Sacred Heart and throughout Nova Scotia. This national trophy is presented each year in memory of Toronto businessman, Willis McLeese, who was a founding Director, and long-standing Treasurer of the Canadian Student Debating Federation. We are so thankful to Kathryn for her continued dedication to the SHSH debate team, and couldn’t be more proud of her. Congratulations, Kathryn!
SHSH parents Patti McKinnon and Phil Roach were also presented with awards at the same ceremony. Both received the Sister Anne LeSota Award in recognition of their remarkable service as debate judges. This award is given to recipients for exceptional service as a debating judge in memory of Sister Anne LeSota, who was extremely active in provincial student debating when she was Headmistress at SHSH. Thank you Patti and Phil for supporting our student debate team, and helping this program continue to thrive in Nova Scotia. Congratulations to you both!
We consider ourselves very lucky to have such a supportive community at Sacred Heart, and recognize that student programs like these wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of coaches and parents. Thank you again Kathryn, Patti, Phil and the rest of the coaches, judges, and advisors for our Debating Program.
