Last week Maggie Smith ran yet another personal best and took yet another Senior Girls’ running title at the Regional Cross Country Championship at Point Pleasant Park. It’s now on to the Provincial Championship later this month. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for our star runner.
Maggie has been identified by the Atlantic division of the Canadian Sports Institute’s Ignite, a national program which provides high-level services and programs for identified student athletes to help them manage their training and academic schedules. Maggie is one of only 37 athletes in the program, and is the first Sacred Heart student athlete to ever be chosen. She is also the first Atlantic Canadian to be included in Athletics. Student athletes in this program are provided with additional training and coaching support and assistance with scheduling and time management. Ignite will also work closely with Maggie’s teachers and coaches here at SHSH to help manage her academic workload and expectations. All of this is part of a strategic approach to developing athletes to compete at the highest national and international levels. We expect that with this additional support, we’ll see Maggie reaching even greater heights; and we’ll be behind her every step of the way! Congratulations Maggie.
