The Debating Season is officially on as the first tournament of the season is now in the books. Several Sacred Heart students attended the Nova Scotia Impromptu Tournament this past weekend at Halifax West High School.
In the Senior High category, Cullen Roach placed 9th and Anisha Rajaselvam 10th. Team rankings included Maddie Peet and Anisha in 5th place, Amelia Wallworth and Julia Wright in 6th, and Cullen and Jaden Lawen in 8th. Maddie, Anisha, Amelia, and Julia all qualify to go to both the British Parliamentary Nationals, formerly known as the Oxford Cup, in Toronto in November, and the Senior Nationals at Sacred Heart in April - congratulations girls!
Junior High individual standings saw Cydney Carruthers in 10th, Charlie Simms in 5th and Evan Laurence in 2nd. Cydney and Holly Jamieson placed 5th as a team. Evan and Charlie were in the Junior Finals against King's-Edgehill, debating in favour of compulsory military service in Canada, and despite a very strong showing, came in 2nd. They also qualify to attend the British Parliamentary Nationals in the under 15 division. Congratulations boys!
While we’re still in the early days, it’s exciting to look ahead to the spring of 2019 when large, international events like the Mace Day Finals for Seniors and the International Competition for Young Debaters will take place. Our six students taking part at the Parliamentary Nationals will have a chance to qualify for both of those, and you can bet they have their eyes on that prize!
Thanks to coaches Mrs. Bjornson, Mrs. Donnelly, Mr. Casey, and Ms. McKay for their guidance and support.
