After back to back competitions, first in Oxford, England and then in Calgary, Alberta, the whirlwind debating season has come to an end.
First up - Oxford, where 4 Junior High debaters - Julia Wright, Amelia Wallworth, Eamon Roach, and Cullen Roach - competed in the International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD) after having qualified at the Queens University Tournament in January. The Competition mirrors the British Parliamentary format, and includes debaters from across the UK, Hong Kong, Slovenia, Greece, Hungary, India, and of course Canada. Congratulations to Julia and Amelia who made it to the semi-finals - a huge accomplishment. Well done to all four students on this impressive feather in their debating caps!
Immediately after Oxford, Julia, Amelia, Eamon, and Cullen were joined by Evan Laurence and Anisha Rajeselvam in Calgary for the Junior High Nationals Debating Tournament. These six debaters qualified for this competition as a result of their success at the February Junior High Provincials. Our three teams from Sacred Heart and Fountain Academy were part of the Nova Scotia delegation which debated against teams from across the county. Congratulations to Eamon and Cullen who made it all the way to the finals! Well done to all six of our debaters.
A big standing ovation to all of our debaters this year, and a special nod to their dedicated coaches who put in countless hours on behalf of these students and SHSH - Robyn Andrecyk, Kathryn Bjornson, Clarissa Brisseau, Brian Casey, Patricia Donnelly, and Christina McKay. A tip of the hat to the many parents who also helped make this year such a success.
