Welálin, Joan Smith!

Our Grade 6 classes were joined by local Mi’kmaw elder Joan Smith this morning to learn all about different L’nu (Mi’kmaq) instruments, songs, and traditions.
We learned about the importance and use of sacred herbs like sage, tobacco, and sweetgrass, as well as how various instruments are made by hand like the clapper (Ji’gmaquan or Elaskate’kn) and turtle rattle. There were songs, dances, and stories that made for a fascinating and entertaining presentation!
