French Language

At Sacred Heart, our approach to French is based on balancing the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as introducing students to French and French Canadian culture. As students progress through each level, they develop their French skills by using them in dialogues and oral presentations, compositions and projects. They learn vocabulary, sight-reading and improvisation.

Multi-media, digital photography, and digital video editing are also used to help students mesh the excitement of new technologies with the strength of the existing French curriculum.

The curriculum is supported by learning techniques that have proven results in helping students acquire real fluency — being able to converse freely and competently.

It begins in junior high with the On y va Programme in Grades 7 & 8, leading to Sans Frontières in Grade 9.

In senior high, the French Programme is divided into two streams: Academic and Advanced. All students with high grades in French are expected to take the Advanced stream.

Academic courses have been developed for students with less background but a keen interest in developing their skills among students of similar skill level.

Students graduating from the Advanced stream have a solid foundation in grammar, presentation and written skills, French literature and spoken fluency.
